John married Nancy Mayo on April 8, 1798 in Monroe County, she was of Scotch-Irish descent and a native of North Carolina where she was born in 1777.
In 1808 John and Nancy, two children, (Easter and Alexander) and two negro children, moved down the Tennessee river in a flat boat to the mouth of Battle Creek while the Indians were still in possession of the country. John later moved to Bledsoe County to a farm owned by the Lamb family, in 1817 he moved to Liberty, Marion County and in 1820 to the David Hoge farm.
John Kelly died on November 26, 1845 and is buried within a short distance of the house he built in 1838 at Kelly's Ferry and still stands today.
In 1826 John was granted a charter by the state to build a turnpike to Ross's Landing in Chattanooga, TN. at this time he constructed the first bridge across the Sequatchie River. He was the first to advocate the building of a road around the base of Lookout Mountain following the route that was used by the N.C. & St. L. Railroad. He and his son in law, Ignatius Hall also had a government contract to remove obstructions from the Tennessee River.
In politics John was a Whig, and a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1834, served as a circuit court clerk and held other public offices.
John helped to organize the Olive Branch Lodge F & M at Jasper, he was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Nancy was a Methodist.
John and Nancy had 13 children.
Easter Kelly married Ignatius Hall January 6, 1820, she died January 12. 1888.
Easter and Ignatius had 9 children, the youngest was Thomas P. Hall died May 5, 1931 at the age of 90 yrs. 8 mos. a daughter Polly lived to be 93 yrs. 5 mos.
Alexander Kelly married Elizabeth Oates. Alexander was a farmer and he also kept the Kelly's Ferry and had a store at different times, he owned 25 slaves before the war. At Ebenezer Cumberland Presbyterian Church he served as a ruling elder.
Adeline Kelly married Daniel Rawlings, she died April 15, 1831
Thomas Kelly married a Foster, he died November 1, 1885
Martha Kelly married James Hoge, she died November 28, 1834
Not much was known about the other children, Valentine went west, James married a Bridges and went to Texas, Margaret died October 25, 1838 and William married Sarah Ann Hoge on January 20, 1846
