General Hoge was a distinguished officer in the War of 1812, served his county and district in the Senate and House of Delegates several terms, and was five times Presidential Elector for his district on the Democratic ticket. He was the grandfather of James Hoge Tyler, Governor of VA. His wife, Eleanor Howe, was his first cousin.
