Notes for Guillaume Fouquet
May have been known as Gill according to Ancestry World Tree entry. One entry lists his birth as 1650. His name is spelled in several different ways in different entries, including "Guilliam William Fuqua". His real name was Guillaume Fouquet, but his descendents apparently americanized the name to Fuqua.

From some sources, notably a published Barret genealogy, he is related to a family of French royalty, and thus to most of the royal families of Europe. However, I have relied on a book from 1974 "Fuqua --A Flight for Freedom" by Alya Dean Smith Irwin as the least "wishful thinking" source. It makes no mention of Royal links. One other reputable source is the DAR says Guillaume came to Henrico County VA about 1680. They cooroborate that he was of Huguenot descent. They note that he had sons Moses and William to whom he left lands in Henrico County and Goochland County VA.

The Irwin book was collaborated on by Eula Haskew, who was a cousin, and who corresponded with Luciester Lane Pattison. Eula Haskew and her niece Tessica Martin were supposed to have done more research on their own, and she once went to Bledsoe Co to do so, but I have not found their research.

I have a copy of some of the pages from the book in my files. All the following is from that source.

He came to America probably from the British Isles prior to 1700.

Other variants on the spelling of his last name are Ffuiquitt, Fuquitt, Fuquett anf Fueque. Most descendents are called Fuqua or Fuquay.

He was renting land from Thomas Cocke in 1696, probably near to his own land on Herrin Creek in Charles City County, VA. Cocke's will mentions Gilly's path, so he was likely living in the area for some time. This area is today the Parish of Westover and Prince George Co. Most of the records are from Henrico Co VA in the county seat of Varina. Varina was near the county line between Henrico and Charle City counties.500
